Loyola University Chicago hosted a four week Civic Leadership Academy for Chicago Public Schools middle school students from July 5 – 28, 2017, that integrated literature, mathematics and civic education

Students participated in literature circles reading counter-narrative novels about young people, learned and applied math and statistics to social issues, and worked together in teams to identify relevant and local issues to develop policy projects as a response to those issues.

The students also worked on policy relative to school discipline, homelessness, handgun violence and presented their policy recommendations to community and political leaders.
